Culmination of the “Save the Trestle” Campaign

Resurrected Trestle Slated for Ribbon Cutting and Opening on January 5, 2024

In 2017, an idea was launched along the banks of the Schuylkill River in Royersford, PA: to renovate the dilapidated train trestle spanning the river just west of Main Street and connecting Royersford to the Schuylkill River Trail in Spring City, Chester County.

The trestle had been a prominent eyesore for as long as most can remember, and few can recall it being used for its original purpose as a train crossing. It had been vandalized over the years, and the elements had taken a toll, but the trestle had good bones and could serve as an essential connection for two counties eager to revitalize and bring about recreational opportunities.

A structural review ensued, followed by an awareness and grassroots fundraising campaign branded “SAVE THE TRESTLE.” A steering committee was formed, consisting of local, county, and state elected officials, trail experts, economic development professionals, and area business leaders. The campaign was well-received as everyone began to reimagine the riverfront as a community asset.

Royersford Borough assumed the leadership role, coordinating grant efforts as well as detailing trail operations and coordinating with contractors to complete significant renovations.

Special thanks to Governor Shapiro, State Representative Ciresi, Royersford Borough, The Lewis Group, Schuylkill River Greenways, and many more organizations, without whom saving the trestle would not have been possible. The trestle project was the recipient of several crucial grants, including those from DCED, DCNR, Montgomery County, and Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation, as well as private funds and contributions from individuals throughout the greater Royersford community.

The trestle is scheduled to open to runners, walkers, and cyclists at noon on January 5, 2024. Save the date and plan to attend the grand opening!
